General Courses

GENERAL TRAINING COURSE (GTC)

Aim: Intended for cadets 12-14 years of age who have completed their first year of cadet training; introduces the cadet to life at a cadet summer training centre (CSTC) with a focus on further opportunities available through air cadet summer training. Activities include: a field exercise, team-building, air rifle range, drill, building and flying paper gliders and rockets, airport operations, marshalling, tours, recreational sports, swimming, music training, general cadet knowledge and citizenship.
Duration: 2 weeks
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit, and have completed Level One training by 30 Jun 10.
Training Centres: Trenton and Bagotville

BASIC LEADERSHIP COURSE (BLC)

Aim: To provide the fundamentals of followership, teamwork and leadership training, extending knowledge acquired in proficiency Level Two; develops self-confidence, knowledge and skills, and provides ample opportunity for practical application. A dynamic learning environment exposing the cadet to a variety of followership, teamwork and leadership opportunities, this course will inspire cadets to pursue further leadership training at the Squadron and on the Leadership and Ceremonial Instructor course, starting in 2011.
Duration: 3 weeks
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit, and have completed Level Two training by 30 Jun 10.
Training Centres: Blackdown, or Bagotville

BASIC FITNESS & SPORTS COURSE (BFSC)

Aim: To provide the fundamentals of fitness and recreational sports training, extending knowledge acquired in proficiency at the home squadron; provides ample opportunity for practical application; promotes the development of ethical sports conduct, sportsmanship and teamwork. The dynamic learning environment exposes cadets to a variety of fitness and recreational sports opportunities; provides basic theoretical, technical, and practical skills required to assist in the delivery of the squadron fitness and recreational sports training program, inspiring pursuit of further fitness and recreational sports training on the Fitness & Sports Instructor course, starting in 2011.
Duration: 3 weeks
Prerequisites: Must be medically fit, have completed Level Two training by 30 Jun 10, and be motivated to increase personal fitness.
Training Centres: Blackdown or Valcartier

BASIC SURVIVAL COURSE (BSC)

Aim: To provide the fundamentals of survival training, extending knowledge acquired in proficiency Level Two; provides ample opportunity for practical application; a dynamic learning environment exposing the cadets to the various aspects of a survival situation, inspires pursuit of further survival training opportunities at the home squadron and on the Survival Instructor Course.
Duration: 3 weeks
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit, and have completed Level Two training by 30 Jun 10
Training Centres: Blackdown or Bagotville  

BASIC AVIATION COURSE (BAC)

Aim: To provide the fundamentals of aviation training, extending knowledge acquired in proficiency Level Two; provides ample opportunity for practical application; a dynamic learning environment inspiring further pursuit of aviation training opportunities at the home squadron and on future aviation related CSTC training courses.
Duration: 3 weeks
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit, and have completed Level Two training by 30 Jun 10,
Training Centre: Trenton and RGS(E)

BASIC AVIATION TECHNOLOGY AND AEROSPACE COURSE (BATAC)

Aim: To further develop fundamental knowledge of aerospace, airport operations, aircraft manufacturing and maintenance; a dynamic learning environment exposing the cadet to a variety of hands-on practical activities, inspiring pursuit of further opportunities in the aerospace and aviation field at the home squadron and possible specialist training on future aerospace and aviation related CSTC program courses.
Duration: 3 weeks
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit, and have completed Level Two training by 30 Jun 10.
Training Centres: Trenton or Bagotville

MILITARY BAND: BASIC MUSICIAN COURSE (MB-BMC)

Aim: To develop the music proficiency of cadets and prepare them to support their home squadron bands and related music activities. They will also experience some aspects of Air Cadet training to assist in their future course selections of the Air CSTC program.
Duration: 3 weeks
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit, and have completed Level Two training by 30 Jun 10.
Training Centre: Blackdown
 

PIPES & DRUMS: BASIC MUSICIAN COURSE 

Aim: Identical to MB-BMC, except that the music training is designed for members of a Squadron pipe and drum band.
Duration: 3 weeks
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit and complete Level two training by 30 Jun 10.

Introductory Specialty Courses


INTRODUCTION TO RIFLE COACHING COURSE (ITRCC)

Aim: To provide the opportunity to develop basic coaching and range assistant skills necessary to support the home squadron marksmanship program; extends knowledge acquired in proficiency Level One and introduces more advanced marksmanship skills: stimulates the necessary theoretical, technical, and practical skills required to monitor and coach other cadets during marksmanship training at the home squadron, and to carry out the duties of a range assistant.
Duration: 3 weeks
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit, and have completed Level Two training by 30 Jun 10.
Training Centre: Connaught

INTRODUCTION TO AEROSPACE COURSE (ITASC)

Aim: To provide training in the fundamentals of aerospace science through the development of knowledge and skills relevant to various aspects of aerospace science and technology; provides opportunity for practical application within the format of a simulated space mission. Candidates should show interest and ability for mathematics and physics.
Duration: 3 weeks
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit, and have completed Level Three training by 30 Jun 10.
Training Centre: RGS Eastern

MUSIC COURSE, LEVELS 1-3 (ML123C)

Aim: To raise musical skills to the standard of the cadet’s next higher music proficiency level; includes instruction in instrument maintenance & repair and other music-related skills. More senior levels also learn some Instructional Techniques relating to music.
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit, have achieved the previous music proficiency level and have completed Level One training by 30 Jun 10.
Duration: 6 weeks
Training Centres: Blackdown Levels 1,2,3) or Trenton (Levels 2 & 3 only)

Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit, have achieved the previous music proficiency level and have completed Level One training by 30 Jun 10.

Advanced Specialty Courses (includes Scholarships) 

NOTE: Senior air cadets applying for an Advanced Specialty Course must submit a completed form DND 2226 (7-09) (Air Cadet Summer Training – National Courses) in addition to the CF 51 form specified for all cadet summer activities.

MUSIC COURSE, LEVELS 4-5 (ML45C)

PIPES AND DRUMS, LEVELS 4-5 (PDL45C)

Aim: Identical to the ML45C, but intended for advanced members of a Squadron pipe and drum band. Duration: 6 weeks
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit, have completed Level Three training by 30 Jun 10 and be qualified as a piper/drummer, level 3 or level 4.

SURVIVAL INSTRUCTOR COURSE (SIC)

AimTo develop survival skills and instructional and leadership abilities in survival training, building upon prior experience at the home squadron and previous CSTC program courses; advanced theoretical and technical skills required to assist in the delivery of survival training at the home squadron and as potential CSTC staff cadets.
Duration: 6 weeks
Prerequisites: Must be medically fit, have a high level of personal fitness, and have completed Level Three training by 30 Jun 10.
Training Centre: Blackdown

ADVANCED AVIATION TECHNOLOGY COURSES

These six-week national courses are designed to further develop instructional ability in technical skills and to introduce background knowledge required in the aircraft maintenance and airport operations fields. There are two distinct courses:

AIRPORT OPERATIONS  (AATC-AO)

Aim: To introduce programming specific to airport operations; accomplished through practical, hands-on learning modules that will reinforce theoretical notions. A dynamic learning environment exposing the cadets to a variety of airport operations, inspiring pursuit of further learning in this program area.
Duration: 6 weeks
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit, and have completed Level Three training by 30 Jun 10.
Training Centre: Canadore College, North Bay, Ont.

AIRCRAFT MAINTANCE (AATC-AM)

Aim: To introduce detailed concepts of aircraft construction and maintenance; accomplished through practical, hands-on learning modules that reinforce classroom theory. A dynamic learning environment exposing cadets to a variety of aircraft construction and maintenance functions, inspiring pursuit of further learning in this program area.
Duration: 6 weeks
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit, and have completed Level Three training by 30 Jun 10.
Training Centre: Canadore College, North Bay, Ont.

ATHLETIC INSTRUCTOR COURSE (AIC)

Aim: To develop athletic skills together with instructional and leadership abilities in physical education extending knowledge acquired at the home squadron and during previous CSTC courses; a dynamic and challenging training opportunity incorporating practical application of theoretical and technical skills to develop candidates’ qualification as specialist instructors in physical education & recreational training at the home squadron and as potential CSTC Staff Cadets.
Duration: 6 weeks
Prerequisites: Must be medically fit, have completed Level Three training by 30 Jun 10 and have achieved the minimum fitness standard detailed at Appendix 2 to Annex C of CATO 51-01
Training Centre: Blackdown

GLIDER PILOT SCHOLARSHIP (GPS)

Aim: An intensive program of ground school and in-flight glider pilot training. Cadets who successfully complete their flight test and Transport Canada (TC) written exam will qualify for a Glider Pilot Licence and be awarded Air Cadet Glider Pilot Wings qualification badge.
Duration: 6 weeks
Prerequisites: Must not currently hold any TC pilot licence; must no less than 16, nor more than 19, years old by 1 Sep 10; must be physically fit and certified to a minimum Category 3 by a Canadian Civil Aviation Medical Examiner; must have completed Level Three training by 30 Jun 10 and grade 9 by the application deadline; must obtain a minimum passing score of 50% on the qualifying exam.

Height and weight restrictions dictated by aircraft type employed:

Height:
-  minimum 4’6”/137.16 cm
- maximum 6’3”/190.5 cm;

Weight:
- minimum 90 lbs/40.82 kg
- maximum 200 lbs/90.72 kg

SENIOR LEADERS COURSE (SLC)

Aim: To provide advanced teamwork and leadership training, extending knowledge acquired through home squadron training; accomplished through development of confidence and team-building skills and by providing ample opportunity for practical application; a dynamic learning environment preparing cadets for leadership positions at the home squadron and CSTCs.
Duration: 6 weeks
Prerequisites: Must be not less than 15 years of age by course start, be medically and physically fit, have completed Level Four training by 30 Jun 10, and preferably have successfully completed a previous summer training course.
Training Centre: Cold Lake

POWER PILOT SCHOLARSHIP (PPS)

Aim: An intensive programme of ground school and in-flight pilot training. Cadets who successfully complete their flight test and Transport Canada (TC) written exam will qualify for a Private Pilot Licence and be awarded the Air Cadet Pilot Wings qualification badge.
Duration: 7 weeks
Prerequisites: Must be no less than 17, nor more than 19, years old by 1 Sep 10; must be physically fit and certified to a minimum Category 3 by a Canadian Civil Aviation Medical Examiner; must have completed Level Four training by 30 Jun 10 and grade 10 by the application deadline, and must obtain a minimum passing score of 50% on the qualifying exam.

Exchanges and Other Summer Activities

OSHKOSH TRIP (OT)

Aim: The Oshkosh Trip provides an opportunity for cadets to participate in various aspects of aviation and to visit another country as part of their education in international affairs. The destination is Oshkosh, Wisconsin in the United States, home to one of the world’s most important air shows. In addition to the air show, cadets will visit aviation museums and take part in some flights as a passenger.
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit, have completed Level Three training by 30 Jun 10, and be admissible as a visitor to the USA.

INTERNATIONAL AIR CADET EXCHANGE (IACE)

Aim: To promote friendship and goodwill among air cadets of participating countries, to encourage participants to develop an interest in international affairs and to reward those air cadets demonstrating outstanding services to their home squadrons over a period of years. The IACE is intended only for outstanding senior cadets who will represent Canada with distinction. Exchange cadets visit air bases, centres of industry, world landmarks, universities, cultural centres and museums, and they experience private hospitality with families in their own homes.

Host countries include: Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Ghana, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States of America.

Prerequisites: Must be no less than 17 and not more than 19 years old by 1 Aug 10; must be medically and physically fit, have completed one year of Level Five training by 30 Jun 10, and be admissible as a visitor to the destination country.

STAFF CADET EMPLOYMENT

Staff cadets are the NCOs of the Summer Training Centres. A staff cadet can assist the officer staff with the instruction and supervision of cadets, or might be tasked in an administrative or logistical support role. Rank and pay for staff cadets depend upon the position filled, usually determined during a pre-course training and evaluation period. A staff cadet applicant must be at least 16 years old on 1 Jan 10 and may not attain age 19 during the summer.
